This system is based on counting note names in octaves, where middle C C4. I bought a used Jackie thinking that range would be fine for what I am playing. Trumpet in Bb ( to me ) only goes as low as the 1st E below middle C ( concert pitch) but today most pros can go as high as the 3rd E above. So everything I saw on the web said the range goes from G below middle C to the c 2 octaves above middle C. The Violin can actually go even higher than that if the player utilizes artificial harmonics which would allow the Violin to reach up to D8. In the lower and upper extremes of the bass voice, some basses can sing from C 2 (two octaves below middle C) to G 4 (the G above middle C). Modern bass trombone is pretty much the same but the in between pedals and normal range range sounds better and most players can go down to as low as 3rd G below middle C. The playable note range of the violin starts on the low G below middle C (G3) all the way up to A7 which is a full two octaves higher than the open E string. The bass clef simply moves through the alphabet, with each line and space representing one 'move.' So, since the bottom line is a G, the space above it is an A. They also frequently get mixed up about which octave A, D, F, G.
